Rules & Guidelines on How to
Handwrite the Constitution

1. You will be writing across the long, horizontal side of the board (board will be in landscape orientation).

2. Use the rubber band to provide horizontal line guidance to keep your lines straight. Do not to write directly above the rubber band as you may cut off writing that extends below the line. We’d suggest leaving one to one and a half inches of space for each line.

3. Don’t worry about section or paragraph line formatting. When you get to the end of a sentence, just keep writing on the same line (including article and section headings). The objective here is to have continuous lines of text with no gaps.

4. This is not a race. While the first group starting the handwriting exercise will all start together, you will likely end in different places, which is where the next writer will start.

5. Sorry, you cannot start anywhere in the U.S. Constitution or focus on your favorite part of the U.S. Constitution. You start where someone has left off.

6. Handwrite only on one side of the white board.

7. You will be transcribing the U.S. Constitution verbatim—no adlibbing or modification of the words or text of the U.S. Constitution.

8. In addition to the small booklet provided to you, a complete copy of the U.S. Constitution can be found in the following links:
